My Big Family

Hua Jin, Montreal, Québec | huajinart.com

My Big Family is a photo project that began in 2010. Driven by a quest for personal identity, Hua Jin left Canada for China to recompose her family genealogy by way of photography.

Made up of more than forty encountered relatives, this multiple and exploded portrait takes on a documentary perspective both familial and social, where the points of entry into the urban or rural reality of contemporary China endlessly multiply. Through personal and attentive observation of ordinary life, Hua Jin conjures the consequences of the one-child policy introduced in China in the 1970s. Each of her pictures is marked by the details of day-to-day existence, reflecting as they do the current realities of Chinese society and the changes in family values, marking the gradual disappearance of the traditional large Chinese family. Although the one-child policy came to an end on October 30, 2015, birth control was maintained, with each household authorized to henceforward have two children.
